This is a highly intricate and beautifully crafted vintage expandable treasure box (known as a duobaohe or curio box), made from Zitan wood (purple sandalwood) and decorated with mother-of-pearl (nacre) inlay.
The box features a clever, mechanical tiered design. The top two lids are inlaid with a shimmering dragon and phoenix motif, rendered in intricate shell cutouts with iridescent green, purple, and cream accents. The interior consists of multiple nested compartments and trays. When the top lid is opened, the internal tiers can be pulled outward via the decorative brass metal hinges and straps on the front and sides, unfolding into a stepped, display-like structure that extends up to 105 cm in length.
The dark Zitan wood displays a distinct "ox hair" grain texture and a rich, warm patina. The box is equipped with a metal carrying handle on the side and rests on a sturdy base. This piece is a functional marvel and a stunning example of traditional Chinese puzzle boxes and scholar's objects, perfect for storing jewelry, seals, or small treasures.
