This is a substantial and highly collectible vintage apothecary or medicine cabinet (known traditionally as a "yaogui"), meticulously crafted from Zitan wood (purple sandalwood).
The cabinet features a classic arrangement of 17 drawers—three across the top row, and two rows of four beneath, plus two deeper drawers at the bottom. Each drawer is fitted with a small, teardrop-shaped brass pull. The wood displays the characteristic dark, rich brown-black tone of Zitan, with a distinct "ox hair" (niu mao) grain texture visible across its surfaces.
The front door of the cabinet is deeply carved with the Chinese characters "同仁堂" (Tong Ren Tang), a famous and historic Chinese pharmaceutical brand, flanked by decorative ruyi cloud motifs in the corners. The cabinet is equipped with metal carrying handles on the sides and sits on a sturdy, stepped base.
This piece is perfect for storing small treasures, jewelry, or herbs, and makes a striking, functional display piece for a desk, shelf, or dresser.
