This is a charming and intricately crafted vintage cricket cage (also known as a singing insect cage), traditionally used in China to house pet crickets.
The cage features a flattened, hexagonal shape with a wooden base and lid, joined by closely spaced vertical wooden bars. The lid and base are decorated with a warm, reddish-brown lacquer or stain, accented with subtle, gold-toned painted or incised patterns along the edges. A sliding wooden door is present on the front for easy access.
The top is crowned with a small, attached finial consisting of a dark, spherical bead (resembling a nut or seed) and a loop made of several smaller carved wooden beads, allowing the cage to be hung or carried. The base rests on four small, spherical wooden feet. This piece is a wonderful example of traditional Chinese folk art and makes a unique decorative object or collector's item.
