An intricately decorated porcelain umbrella stand that brings the richness of a painted garden into the interior. Hand-painted in Macau on a Chinese-made porcelain body, this vintage piece combines oversized chrysanthemums, flowering branches, ornamental rockwork, and elaborate borders with raised enamel accents and luminous gilt detailing.
Standing 19 inches tall, its slender cylindrical silhouette offers a practical footprint for an entryway while providing a substantial surface for the decoration. The garden continues around the entire circumference, allowing the stand to be appreciated from multiple viewpoints and positioned to feature different passages of the design.
Large chrysanthemums unfold in coral, lavender, blush pink, and pale yellow, their petals individually outlined and shaded. A spreading blue-gray tree introduces movement through its twisting branches, finely articulated bark, ivory blossoms, and clusters of red and cobalt-blue buds. Smaller pink flowering shrubs, sage-green foliage, grasses, and stylized rock formations complete the scene. Open areas of warm ivory ground give the dense floral passages room to breathe.
The surface rewards close inspection. Raised enamel accents lend dimension to selected blossoms and buds, while fine painted lines describe petals, leaf veins, and the contours of the branches. Dense gilt stippling surrounds portions of the garden, catching the light as the piece is viewed from different angles. Gold outlining and decorative reserves further enrich the composition. The chrysanthemum, traditionally associated with autumn and longevity in East Asian art, adds a meaningful cultural reference to the floral imagery.
Its contrasting borders provide a particularly strong decorative framework. The upper band alternates coral floral panels with gilt latticework and powder-blue ornamental reserves, edged by dark scalloped lines. Around the foot, a broad powder-blue band contains scrolling foliage, coral rosettes, and lobed gold-ground floral cartouches. These coordinated borders give the flowing garden scene definition and make the piece equally effective alongside patterned textiles or more restrained furnishings.
For an interior designer, the appeal lies in the balance of color, scale, and placement flexibility. The ivory ground and softened floral palette work beautifully with walnut and mahogany furniture, black lacquer, grasscloth, antique brass, and botanical fabrics. Place it beside a paneled doorway, beneath a gilt mirror, or alongside an antique console to introduce pattern at floor level. It is particularly suited to collected traditional, English country, chinoiserie, and grandmillennial interiors.
For a collector, the surviving labels preserve useful evidence of the piece’s production and retail history. The origin label reads “Porcelain Blank Made in China / Handpainted in Macau,” documenting the Chinese manufacture of the body and its subsequent decoration in Macau. A retained Orient East Ltd. retail label provides an additional connection to its commercial history. The underside also carries a red Qianlong-style reign mark, a traditional mark used decoratively on this later twentieth-century piece.
The ornament reflects the influence of Japanese Satsuma decoration within Macau’s export porcelain tradition. Its combination of a continuous garden composition, raised enamels, extensive gilt work, distinctive borders, and retained labels gives buyers several tangible details to appreciate beyond its practical function.
Use as an umbrella or walking-stick stand, display with tall dried branches, or enjoy independently as a richly patterned floor vessel.
