Design & Craftsmanship
• The Sterling Silver Frame: The central rectangular frame is crafted from solid sterling silver, featuring a classic vertical engine-turned pattern (fine pinstripe engraving). At the top peak of the arched crest sits an elegant, classic applied ribbon and laurel wreath motif.
• The Triptych Case: The frame is beautifully integrated into a folding three-panel (triptych) travel or desk case. The panels are covered in a rich, deep green morocco leather with fine graining and finished with delicate gold-tooled borders.
Maker & Context
The piece bears the hallmark of Black, Starr & Frost, renowned as one of America's oldest and most prestigious luxury jewelers and silversmiths, rivaling Tiffany & Co. during the Gilded Age and Edwardian periods. Objects of this nature from the firm typically date between 1900 and 1915. The folding triptych design allowed prominent families to securely protect and elegantly display family portrait photography on writing desks or during travel.
