Standing a proud 8 inches tall, this exceptional matching set dates to the 1880s–1890s and is a masterful example of classic European art pottery.
The hand-sculpted figures depict a charming street vendor couple in traditional peasant dress—a gentleman in a rich brown coat and hat, paired with a woman wearing a deep cobalt blue shawl and warm yellow skirt. At their feet sit hollowed cylindrical pots with pink-glazed interiors designed to hold matches or spills. The textured, unglazed gray outer faces of the pots function beautifully as the match-striking surfaces.
Finished in a highly glossy, vibrant majolica glaze with a beautifully mottled green-and-brown earth-toned base, the underside reveals a hollow glazed interior and an incised factory batch/painter's mark.
