An extraordinary large-scale Chinoiserie apothecary cabinet by Maitland-Smith, distinguished by its elaborate painted decoration, exceptional architectural detailing, and impressive collection of individually functioning drawers.
Standing over six feet tall, this magnificent cabinet features an intricate arrangement of square and elongated rectangular drawers, each adorned with colorful birds, flowering branches, botanical illustrations, and whimsical animal scenes against contrasting dark backgrounds. Rich shades of gold, red, green, and blue bring the decorative compositions to life, creating a captivating display inspired by traditional Asian art and European Chinoiserie design.
The beautifully detailed upper cabinet is crowned with substantial architectural molding and embellished with decorative brass-tone hardware. Additional framed bird and floral compositions adorn the sides, providing visual interest from multiple angles.
The cabinet rests upon an elegant Queen Anne-style base featuring spacious storage drawers, traditional brass-tone bail pulls, a gracefully shaped apron, and beautifully carved cabriole legs with scrolling foliate decoration.
Both decorative and functional, the numerous upper compartments open individually, offering an exceptional combination of storage and visual artistry.
The cabinet is constructed in two separate sections, allowing the upper portion to be removed from the lower stand for easier transportation and installation.
A remarkable example of Maitland-Smith’s distinctive approach to decorative furniture, combining Old World craftsmanship, Chinoiserie-inspired artistry, and traditional English furniture influences.
An exceptional statement piece for a grand living room, library, dining room, study, or sophisticated eclectic interior.
