An exceptional, mirrored pair of authentic vintage mid-century Italian majolica glazed terra-cotta whippet/greyhound figurines. Beautifully modeled in the classic Palm Beach Hollywood Regency style, each majestic dog sits upright on a highly detailed, hand-painted olive-green tasseled pillow base and features a matching gilded collar.
Hand-pressed from authentic red terra-cotta clay in Italy, both pieces retain their original hand-painted factory markings on the unglazed rims underneath. The bases are clearly signed with the model/mold code "T.1522", "Made in Italy", and the workshop or decorator's monogram "CB".

Many surviving Italian terra-cotta pieces from this era suffer from severe aftermarket breaks, but this pair retains excellent structural integrity. True to the hand-crafted and hand-fired nature of mid-century Italian earthenware, there are unique, factory-original production traits present that tell the story of their creation: • Factory Clay Fills: There are original, pre-firing factory fills on the legs and a historic factory glaze touch-up on the inside area of the mouth/lip. These were completed at the workshop prior to the final distribution to smooth out multi-part mold seams and minor kiln-contraction lines. • Natural Crazing: A beautiful, light network of natural age crazing is visible across the flanks and majolica glaze bodies, which is entirely standard and expected for decades-old tin-glazed earthenware. While they bear these artisan imperfections rather than a sterile machine finish, they remain remarkably well-preserved, glossy, and incredibly striking display pieces for a mantel, console, or formal entryway. less
