Description:
Presenting a stunning, estate-fresh piece of 19th-century American sporting heritage: Plate VIII, "The Buffle-Headed Duck," by renowned wildlife artist Alexander Pope Jr. (1849–1924). Published in New York by Charles Scribner's Sons and masterfully printed by Armstrong & Co. in 1878, this vibrant chromolithograph comes from Pope’s legendary portfolio Upland Game Birds and Water Fowl of the United States.
The Fascinating Provenance:
What makes this specific piece an exceptional collector’s item is the historic Abercrombie & Fitch Co. of New York retail and gallery labels securely attached to the front layout. Long before it became the modern clothing retailer we know today, the original Abercrombie & Fitch (founded in 1892) was the world's absolute pinnacle of luxury outdoor outfitting. During the early-to-mid 20th century, their flagship Madison Avenue store housed a prestigious, elite art gallery catering to wealthy hunters, industrialists, and conservationists. This print was acquired directly through that legendary New York gallery, offering an ironclad stamp of authenticity and a wonderful conversation piece.

The chromolithograph ink remains beautifully balanced and crisp. Uniquely preserved, there is no visible water damage, fading, or foxing (brown spotting) anywhere on the print surface. * The Backing Card: The print rests on its original 1878 publisher-issued 24" x 17" backing card. In keeping with its 140+ year age, the extreme outer corners of this heavy paper card are fragile and show historical degradation/chipping. * Note for Framing: The central artwork margins are entirely unaffected. Because the outer corners are fragile, standard mounting corners should be avoided; a professional custom framer can easily and beautifully mount this using hidden Japanese tissue hinges or a custom sink-mat design to float-frame the piece while preserving the historic edges and the prominent Abercrombie & Fitch tag. less
