A charming Chinese carved giltwood openwork panel depicting a stylized deer beneath a pine tree, likely early to mid-20th century. Intricately carved pine needles, scrolling ornament, and a wonderfully aged palette of gold, cinnabar red, and pale blue-green give this small decorative fragment remarkable presence.
In traditional Chinese symbolism, the deer and pine are associated with longevity and good fortune. The panel's richly worn gilding and painted surfaces lend it an appealing sense of history. An excellent accent for a gallery wall, library, or thoughtfully collected interior. From a distinguished Fifth Avenue estate in New York City.
