Now here’s something to ponder! A fabulous pair of 1929 cast-iron “The Thinker” bookends by the Connecticut Foundry Company of Rocky Hill, Connecticut, featuring one of the most recognizable figures in the history of sculpture.
Each bookend depicts Auguste Rodin’s celebrated The Thinker in relief, seated in his familiar contemplative pose against a finely striated ground. The figures are framed by wonderfully architectural Art Deco silhouettes, while the warm bronze-toned finish has developed rich, dark patination over nearly a century.
The textured backs retain especially wonderful documentation: each is cast with the company’s distinctive C-in-triangle-in-circle emblem, “COPR,” the date “1929” and the title “THE THINKER.”
At once sculptural, functional and unmistakably of their era, these substantial little Thinkers would be fabulous holding a collection of favorite books—or simply displayed as decorative objects on a bookshelf, desk or library table. A wonderful gift for a book lover, art lover or deep thinker.
The Connecticut Foundry Company began operating its foundry in Rocky Hill in 1919. In addition to industrial gray-iron castings, the company became known for decorative cast-iron objects, including bookends, plaques and doorstops.

The bronze-toned finish shows scattered rubbing and small areas of surface/finish loss, particularly to the textured backs and high points, along with limited areas of oxidation and green verdigris. Cast details remain remarkably crisp and well defined. No cracks, breaks or repairs observed. The undersides retain their old fitted felt coverings, which show age, wear, discoloration and some loose/frayed fibers. Measurements are approximate. less
