On offer is an elegant gilt wood "bullseye" convex mirror, which expresses a classic American Federal period aesthetic that flourished between roughly 1785 and 1830. It was a time that coincided with the early years of the United States republic. This style was deeply influenced by the neoclassical movement in Europe, particularly the work of British architects Robert and James Adam. To break away from heavy British Baroque (and Monarchial) styles, American makers looked toward classical Roman and Greek motifs. This movement heavily incorporated nationalist iconography to evoke a sense of democratic tradition, pride and sovereignty for the young nation.
STYLE: While a later revival piece, this mirror perfectly replicates the exact design vocabulary of the historic Federal era, starting with the spread eagle.
A prominent American bald eagle with outstretched wings is perched boldly at the crest. It stands on a decorative plinth flanked by formal ribbons.
• The convex "bullseye" mirrored glass: The mirror refers to the curved, fish-eye style glass which was highly prized in the early 19th century. Such convex mirrors distorted light to bounce more brightness into dimly lit rooms.
• The reeded gilt frame: The circular frame features parallel grooved detailing, or reeding, a standard ancient Roman structural pattern revived during the neoclassical era.
• The spherules (balls): The outer groove is lined with decorative gilt spheres nestled inside the rim. In traditional 13-colony folklore, it was said that 13 spheres represent the original states, though historical designers routinely added more purely for visual spacing.
• The laurel wreath & ribbon swags: Carved leaf foliage frames the top and bottom arches, tied neatly with carved cross-ribbon "X” motifs, another signature nod to classical antiquity.
MAKER: While designed in the historic 1800s American tradition, the reverse of this piece reveals that it is an authentic mid-20th-century revival item. The back preserves original red-and-white shipping tape reading: "Handle With Care: GLASS - Tyre Bros. Glass & Paint Co." Historical records indicate that the Tyre Bros. Glass & Paint Co. operated out of San Francisco and Oakland, California, during the 1930s through the 1950s.
USE TODAY: Hang it over a console table to create an elegant and welcoming architectural visual anchor where guests walk through the front door. Display it over a fireplace mantel, where it will serve as a traditional centerpiece above a formal living room hearth. And place it between two windows to fill a narrow wall space while brilliantly adding to the natural light reflected from the outdoors.
Signature/Maker’s Mark: Nonexistent. Mirror dimensions: 17 inches in diameter.
