The deep, warm patina of the oak glows against ivory upholstery woven with a soft lattice pattern, finished with a row of brass nailheads framing the back and seat.
The twisting turnings bring rhythm and movement to every leg and stretcher, ending in turned bun feet that give each chair a sturdy, grounded stance. The frames are built with pegged mortise and tenon joinery in the time honored manner, and the carved lions atop the back posts, ancient emblems of strength and courage, lend a noble sculptural presence in the true Renaissance spirit.
During the Napoleon III era, the Renaissance Revival became one of the most admired styles of the second half of the 19th century, as cabinetmakers celebrated the artistry of the past through bold turnings and expressive carving.
Gathered around a farm table or a trestle table, the set brings Old World warmth to a dining room or breakfast room. Divided into pairs, the chairs also work beautifully flanking a console in an entry, at a writing table in a library, or along a hallway.
The vintage upholstery remains in serviceable condition.
