The T-shaped … Read more A heavy, well-balanced corkscrew in silver plate over copper, designed by Royal Hickman and marked with three crowns. The T-shaped handle is a solid rectangular bar with crisp square edges. A band of fine beaded wire wraps each end, and a slim shaft leads to an open spiral worm. It feels weighty and comfortable in the hand, and it opens a cork smoothly, which makes it a very good choice for champagne.

The silver plate is bright and polished, with a faint warm glow of copper at the edges where the plate has softened with use. The three crowns mark appears on the handle beside additional small stamps. It is a sculptural tool that looks as good laid on a bar tray as it does in a drawer.

About the designer: Royal Arden Hickman (1893–1969) was an American designer who worked in pottery, glass, silver, aluminum, furniture and lamps. He joined Haeger Potteries in 1934 and served as its chief designer from 1938 to 1944, creating the Royal Haeger line. His best-known design is the black panther of 1941. He also ran his own pottery in Tampa, Florida, in the 1940s, later worked for Vernon Potteries in California, and spent his last years in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Measurements are 4.5 inches wide by 4 inches high by 1 inch deep.
