Combining finely cut English crystal, a hallmarked sterling silver collar and stopper, and a bespoke hardwood stand, this substantial decanter represents a contemporary interpretation of a centuries-old port-drinking tradition. The generously proportioned globular body is formed from brilliant hand-finished crystal with deeply cut geometric decoration characteristic of Stourbridge glassmaking. The neck is surmounted by an elegant sterling silver fitting, hallmarked in Sheffield for 2000 and bearing the maker's mark of Francis Howard. True to traditional hogget or hoggit form, the decanter has a projecting glass peg beneath its rounded base and therefore cannot stand independently. Instead, it rests securely within a specially carved hardwood stand, where the peg locates into a central recess. This unusual construction has its origins in traditional formal dining. Once removed from its stand, a hogget could not simply be placed upon the table and consequently had to continue its journey from guest to guest before eventually returning to the host and its wooden base. The design transformed the serving of port into an engaging social ritual. The warm tone and sculptural form of the hardwood stand provide an attractive contrast to the brilliance of the cut crystal and polished silver. The underside of the stand is finished with green baize. At approximately 13 inches high and weighing around 2.5 kg including its stand, this is a substantial and highly decorative example. Its Millennium date makes it particularly appealing as a commemorative piece, while the combination of Stuart Crystal, English silver and Stourbridge craftsmanship gives it considerable collector interest.
