The composition presents an elegant female figure gracefully posed in contrapposto, dressed in flowing classical robes and balancing an amphora upon her head while carrying a second vessel at her side. The fluid movement and naturalistic folds of the drapery demonstrate the accomplished sculptural modelling for which Royal Worcester became celebrated during this period. The quality and character of the modelling show the influence of James Hadley, one of the most important designers and modellers associated with the Royal Worcester factory and a major influence on its late 19th-century figural production. A restrained palette of ivory and softly tinted green enhances the sculptural quality of the figure, allowing the modelling, graceful proportions and classical details to take precedence over elaborate surface decoration. The design reflects the widespread Neoclassical revival of the period, drawing inspiration from ancient Greek sculpture and the enduring influence of Grand Tour aesthetics. The substantial scale of the figure gives it considerable decorative presence. Larger Royal Worcester figures of this character were designed as statement pieces for prominent display and are particularly impressive when placed upon a mantelpiece, console, pedestal or within a collection of English porcelain. The underside bears the Royal Worcester crown mark together with a registration reference, consistent with production during the late Victorian to Edwardian period. A refined example of English porcelain combining accomplished sculptural modelling, classical inspiration and the technical craftsmanship associated with Royal Worcester at the turn of the 20th century. Presented in very good antique condition. Minor surface wear and light age-related marks to the base are consistent with age and careful display. No significant restoration has been observed under normal inspection. See less
