The composition is dominated by crisp white façades set against a clear pale-blue sky, with architectural details unfolding through the narrow village street. A sweeping stone arch creates a particularly attractive focal point and gives the composition a strong sense of depth, while colourful flowering foliage cascading from an upper balcony introduces a subtle accent of red and green. Executed with expressive, heavily textured brushwork, the artist has used areas of impasto and deliberately exposed ground to create a wonderfully tactile surface. Shades of white, turquoise, powder blue, ochre and earthy brown capture the brilliant Mediterranean light and weathered character of traditional island architecture. The painting is indistinctly signed to the lower portion of the composition and displays a loose, modern Impressionistic approach particularly suited to its architectural subject. with its fresh palette and understated Mediterranean atmosphere, this decorative work would complement coastal, contemporary and modern interiors particularly well, bringing the relaxed character of a Greek island village into the home.
