The elephant is depicted in ceremonial dress, richly ornamented with a decorative saddle cloth, harness, anklets and patterned head covering. Its raised and curling trunk gives the sculpture an animated presence and is traditionally associated in Indian culture with good fortune, prosperity and protection. The carving is enhanced with a muted palette of grey, turquoise, blue, yellow and reddish tones, much of which has gently worn with age to reveal the natural wood beneath. This time-softened surface gives the piece considerable decorative character and an appealing sense of authenticity. Particular attention has been given to the carved textile patterns, ceremonial fittings and facial details, while the substantial form and raised trunk create a strong sculptural silhouette. The surface displays age-related rubbing, fading, small marks and areas of loss to the painted decoration, all consistent with age and use and contributing to its richly patinated appearance. A characterful example of Indian decorative folk art, ideal for a collection of South Asian objects or as a striking accent within an eclectic, colonial-inspired or contemporary interior. See less
