The rectangular top provides a practical surface for books, drinks or decorative objects while retaining compact proportions that make the table particularly versatile within smaller living spaces. The table is supported upon a substantial refectory-style base, reflecting the emphasis on robust construction and traditional craftsmanship associated with the Arts and Crafts movement. Particularly appealing are the pierced heart-shaped motifs incorporated into either side of the base. These charming cut-out details introduce a distinctive decorative element to the otherwise restrained design and give the table considerable individuality and character. The golden oak itself displays pronounced natural grain and attractive figuring throughout. Rich honey-golden tones and an appealing aged patina enhance the warmth of the timber and complement the simplicity of the construction. Very well made with a reassuringly solid feel and presented in good antique condition, with appropriate signs of age and use consistent with its early 20th-century origin. Measuring only 71.5 cm wide, this is a particularly desirable compact example. Its combination of Arts and Crafts character, unusual heart motifs and warm golden oak makes it equally suitable as a coffee table, occasional table or low side table within a traditional, country-house or eclectic contemporary interior.
