An exceptional large Victorian Gothic twin-light wall torchère dating to the mid-19th century, circa 1850s, combining substantial wrought iron and bronze construction with dramatic flame-form opaline glass shades. Designed in the manner of ecclesiastical and Gothic Revival lighting, the fixture features two elongated torch-form bodies constructed in wrought iron, with ribbed architectural detailing and decorative scrollwork. The twin torches converge towards the base and are supported from a substantial central wall mounting. Each torch is crowned by a French hand-moulded tinted opaline glass flame shade. Their deeply modelled flame forms create a particularly dramatic effect when illuminated, giving the appearance of a pair of burning ceremonial torches. The fixture can be installed as an uplighter or inverted as a downlight, making it an unusually versatile piece of 19th-century architectural lighting. Fully wired and tested and fitted with two B22 bayonet bulb holders.
