Weighing more than 7.3 lb, the lamp has the robust construction associated with early industrial and workshop lighting. It stands on a heavy rectangular stepped cast-bronze base incorporating a cantilever tension-control mechanism and spiral worm screw, allowing the position of the lamp to be adjusted and secured. The distinctive double-skinned bronze swan-neck arm provides approximately 90 degrees of controlled angular adjustment and terminates in a lockable swivelling shade-carrier fork. This allows the long rectangular shade to be directed precisely over a desk or work surface. The original bronze trough-form shade retains a contrasting enamelled finish, with a white interior designed to reflect the light and a black exterior providing a strong industrial appearance. Original electrical details include a bronze and ceramic e27 edison screw bulb holder, two-part bakelite hercules isolator/connector switch and an original 1930s brown bakelite three-round-pin crabtree plug. Professionally rewired and tested, and reported to be in full working order. A particularly characterful example of british interwar industrial lighting, equally effective as a functional desk lamp or sculptural accent in a contemporary interior.
