The fall-front opens to form a practical writing surface at a comfortable desk height of 70 cm. Behind is a thoughtfully fitted interior incorporating a series of compartments for organising correspondence, documents, stationery and writing accessories. The bureau retains its key, an attractive feature that contributes to the authentic period character of the piece. Below the writing section are three generously proportioned drawers, providing useful concealed storage for documents and personal items. Each retains its original handles, preserving the traditional appearance of the bureau. Particularly attractive are the barley-twist legs, a characteristic feature of Jacobean Revival furniture. These finely turned supports give the bureau considerable architectural and decorative interest and are united by a substantial stretcher for additional strength and stability. The oak displays pronounced natural grain and attractive figuring throughout. Rich, warm tones and an appealing aged patina beautifully complement the traditional design and give the timber considerable depth and character.
