Of circular domed form, the piece combines delicate precious-metal inlay with the rich tonal appearance associated with tortoiseshell jewellery of the period. ㅤ The gently domed circular body provides an elegant ground for the central butterfly motif, which is intricately formed using contrasting gold and silver piqué decoration. The butterfly is surrounded by a finely worked decorative border, creating a balanced and visually engaging composition. ㅤ Piqué work is a traditional decorative technique in which tiny points, pins or strips of precious metal are carefully inlaid into another material to create intricate patterns and pictorial designs. The technique became particularly fashionable for jewellery and personal accessories during the 18th and 19th centuries. ㅤ The combination of warm gold and cool silver tones creates an attractive contrast against the dark mottled ground, while the curved surface allows the metallic decoration to catch the light beautifully when worn. ㅤ The reverse is fitted with a traditional C-clasp characteristic of antique brooch construction.
