One figure stands beside the tree playing a slender pipe or flute, while her companion sits contemplatively on the woodland floor. The figures emerge softly from an ethereal landscape dominated by blue, turquoise and muted green tones, giving the composition a distinctly dreamlike quality. Triquet's treatment combines his French academic training with the increasingly Symbolist sensibilities of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Rather than presenting the figures as conventional portrait subjects, they inhabit an idealised, timeless landscape. The musical instrument, secluded woodland setting and classical nudity reinforce the work's pastoral and mythological character. The considerable scale is particularly impressive. At approximately 165 cm high before framing and 190 cm overall, the painting has the presence of a major decorative work and would make a striking focal point within a large interior. Presented in an elaborate gilt frame decorated with repeating foliate ornament. Signed "Jules Triquet" lower left. About Jules Octave Triquet Born in Paris in 1867, Jules Octave Triquet was a French painter, pastellist and illustrator whose work encompassed portraiture, landscapes, genre subjects and allegorical compositions. Triquet studied under prominent French academic painters including Tony Robert-Fleury, Eugène Le Roux and William-Adolphe Bouguereau. His training within the French academic tradition is evident in his handling of the human figure, while works such as the present painting demonstrate the influence of the more atmospheric and Symbolist tendencies emerging around the turn of the century. His compositions frequently combined carefully modelled figures with softer, evocative landscapes, bridging academic figurative painting and the poetic imagery associated with late 19th-century French art. Triquet died in Paris in 1914.
