The design reflects the influence of c.f.a. Voysey and the wider arts and crafts tradition, favouring strong architectural proportions and carefully considered decorative detailing over the more elaborate ornament of the preceding victorian period. An original registration mark dates the design to 1908, firmly placing the fireplace within the edwardian era and providing an important historical reference for the piece. Reclaimed from a period property in wallingford, oxfordshire, the surround has undergone a comprehensive professional refurbishment designed to preserve the quality and definition of the original cast iron. Historic layers of paint were painstakingly removed by hand rather than through shot blasting, helping to protect the original surface and retain the crispness of the cast decoration. The entire fireplace was subsequently wire brushed to both the front and reverse. Traditional grate polish was then carefully applied and buffed by brush, producing a rich dark metallic finish that highlights the depth and definition of the original castings. The reverse has also been professionally prepared and painted, ensuring that the fireplace has been fully refurbished from front to back. With its documented 1908 date, oxfordshire provenance and distinctive arts and crafts character, this substantial fireplace represents an attractive example of early 20th-century british architectural ironwork. A striking period chimneypiece ideally suited to an arts and crafts or edwardian property, while its restrained architectural design also lends itself beautifully to a sophisticated contemporary interior.
