The surround features a traditional arched opening with prominent bosses positioned within the spandrels, creating a strong and balanced decorative composition. Above, crisp cast ornamentation sits beneath an elegant serpentine mantel shelf, adding movement and refinement to the otherwise substantial architectural form. The quality and definition of the casting are particularly attractive, reflecting the decorative craftsmanship associated with victorian cast iron fireplace production. Recently reclaimed, the fireplace is currently presented in its unrestored condition with a white-painted finish, retaining the character and surface associated with its previous installation. The surround may be displayed with its existing painted finish or professionally stripped and refurbished. When finished with traditional black grate polish, the cast iron would develop an attractive gunmetal to pewter appearance, further highlighting the depth and crispness of the original decoration. A substantial and highly decorative victorian architectural feature, ideal for the sympathetic restoration of a period property or as an impressive focal point within a traditional or eclectic interior.
