The sitter is portrayed half-length in three-quarter profile, wearing classically inspired drapery over a white garment. His carefully modelled features, neatly arranged dark hair and composed expression lend the portrait a distinguished character, while the restrained costume gives the work a distinctly Neoclassical and Romantic sensibility. Executed with delicate washes and precise draughtsmanship, the artist has concentrated detail around the sitter's face and upper body before allowing the composition to soften toward the lower edge. Subtle flesh tones and gentle shading contrast with the warm brown drapery and pale background, producing an understated and sophisticated portrait. The work is unsigned, adding an element of intrigue to the sitter and artist's identities. Its accomplished handling and presentation are characteristic of British portrait watercolours produced during the early to mid-19th century. Presented beneath glass with a finely ruled mount and an attractive burr wood frame with gilt detailing, the portrait is in excellent decorative condition and ready to hang.
