Richly modelled in relief, the design combines macabre symbolism with architectural ornament, creating a distinctive decorative piece with strong visual presence. The winged skull is a historic memento mori motif associated with mortality and the transience of life. Here, the deeply recessed eye sockets, sculpted bone structure and layered feather detailing give the plaque an aged, almost architectural character. Finished in a weathered stone tone that accentuates the relief and surface texture, this unusual plaque would make an atmospheric addition to a Gothic interior, library, hallway, garden wall, collection of curiosities or eclectic decorative scheme.
