Painted in oil on canvas, the work is an excellent example of petitjean's celebrated later marine subjects. The composition is dominated by brilliant turquoise-blue water, animated by reflections from the boats, architecture and sky. Sailing vessels gathered around the harbour provide a strong focal point, while the waterfront buildings and prominent church tower create an attractive architectural backdrop. Petitjean's increasingly free and impressionistic handling is particularly evident in the water, where energetic strokes of blue, turquoise, green, pink and ochre capture the constantly changing reflections and movement of the harbour. The painting is signed “e. Petitjean” lower left and is presented in an impressive, richly ornamented gilt frame. Born in the vosges in 1844, edmond marie petitjean first exhibited at the paris salon in 1874 and became a member of the société des artistes français in 1883. His career brought considerable official recognition, including medals at the salon and major international exhibitions. He received a silver medal at the exposition universelle of 1889 and a gold medal at the exposition universelle of 1900, as well as appointment as a chevalier de la légion d'honneur. Petitjean was particularly admired for landscapes and marine subjects. His travels provided inspiration for paintings of brittany, normandy, lorraine, the vosges and the massif central, while the latter part of his career saw an increasing concentration on the ports and harbours of france. His paintings are represented in numerous french public collections, including museums in amiens, arras, chambéry, digne, épinal, gray, nancy, paris, reims, la rochelle and toul.
