An exceptional and monumental 19th-century English draw-leaf dining table, finely crafted from oak and extending to an impressive 425 cm (approximately 14 feet), making it an outstanding example of large-scale period dining furniture. The table's defining feature is its ingenious draw-leaf construction.
In its closed configuration, it measures a substantial yet more manageable 242.5 cm, while the concealed extension leaves draw out to create an extraordinary 425 cm dining surface for larger gatherings and formal entertaining. When not required, the leaves tuck neatly beneath the principal tabletop, preserving the table's handsome proportions while eliminating the need to store separate extension leaves elsewhere. The substantial base is particularly impressive, with beautifully turned legs enriched by finely executed carved decoration. These are united by robust floor-level stretchers, providing the structural strength and stability required for a table of this exceptional scale while giving the base considerable architectural presence. Particularly appealing is the oak itself, displaying pronounced natural grain and attractive figuring throughout. Rich, warm colour and a mature patina developed through generations of age and use give the timber considerable depth and authentic antique character. At 106.5 cm wide, the tabletop provides generous depth for formal place settings, serving pieces and decorative centrepieces, while its extraordinary extended length makes it particularly suitable for substantial dining rooms and large-scale entertaining.
Very well constructed and presented in very good antique condition, with appropriate signs of age and historic use consistent with its 19th-century origin. Large antique dining tables capable of extending to approximately 14 feet are particularly desirable, and this example combines exceptional scale with the practicality of an integrated draw-leaf mechanism. It would make a commanding centrepiece for a country house, substantial dining room, private members' club, hospitality setting or other distinguished interior.
