Executed in oil on canvas, the work demonstrates Gaussen's accomplished treatment of water, light and atmosphere. The Mediterranean coastline provided a constant source of inspiration throughout his career, and his mature paintings are characterised by an impressionistic handling of colour and an ability to capture the distinctive brilliance of southern French light. Gaussen trained in Marseille and subsequently worked in Paris, where he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1893. His close association with the sea eventually extended beyond his easel painting when he was appointed an official painter to the French Navy. The painting is signed at the lower left and presented in a decorative frame. Its intimate scale and atmospheric handling make it an appealing example of early 20th-century French marine painting. About Adolphe Louis Gaussen Adolphe Louis Gaussen (1871–1954) was a French landscape and marine painter closely associated with Marseille, Provence and the Mediterranean coast. Gaussen studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Marseille and later worked in the studio of noted Provençal marine painter Jean-Baptiste Olive, whose influence can be seen in Gaussen's lifelong interest in coastal light and maritime subjects. During the early part of his career Gaussen worked in Paris and exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1893, later becoming a member. He also exhibited with the Société Coloniale. Gaussen specialised in seascapes, harbours, waterscapes and Provençal landscapes, drawing much of his inspiration from the ports and shores of the Mediterranean. His standing as a marine painter was recognised through his appointment as an official painter to the French Navy. He also served as a museum curator in Marseille and held numerous solo exhibitions during his career. His paintings entered museum collections in France and internationally, establishing him as a notable representative of Provençal and Mediterranean marine painting.
