A rare william iv period brass lamp by palmer & co. Of london, dating to circa 1830s and subsequently converted from its original candle-burning configuration for use as an electric table lamp. The substantial brass body is richly decorated with deep-relief cast and embossed ornamentation, demonstrating the elaborate approach to domestic lighting produced during the early 19th century. Originally constructed as a spring-fed metallic-wick candle lamp, the mechanism would have maintained the position of the burning candle as it was consumed. The lamp retains its palmer & co. London attribution and period brass gallery, preserving the historic character of the original fitting. It is crowned by a later, circa 1930s, hand-moulded tinted glass flame shade, whose dramatic sculptural form complements the ornate regency and william iv character of the brass base. The lamp has been professionally converted and rewired for electricity using antique-style three-core fabric-braided cable. It is earthed and tested and incorporates a period bakelite pear-form inline push-button switch. An unusual marriage of early 19th-century british lighting technology and decorative 1930s glass, offering considerable appeal as both a functional lamp and a piece of lighting history.
