The figure is rendered with confident, economical draughtsmanship, capturing the weight, volume and natural contours of the body while retaining the immediacy characteristic of an artist’s life study. The relaxed pose and understated treatment place the emphasis firmly upon form, proportion and observation rather than elaborate setting. White’s assured handling reflects his extensive academic training and lifelong engagement with figurative art. Born near Adelaide, South Australia, he travelled to England in 1913 and studied at Heatherley’s School of Fine Art before continuing his artistic education in Paris and at the Slade School of Fine Art in London. He subsequently joined the Slade teaching staff, where he remained until his retirement in 1957. Alongside his influential teaching career, White exhibited with prominent galleries and artistic societies, including Agnew’s, the Redfern Gallery and the New English Art Club. In 1958 he founded the Samuel Palmer School of Art in Shoreham, Kent. His works are represented in important British institutional collections, including the British Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum and Ashmolean Museum. This intimate figure study is a particularly appealing example of White’s draughtsmanship, combining academic discipline with an expressive and natural treatment of the human form. Presented glazed within an oak frame, the drawing remains in very good condition, with minimal age-related toning and no significant visible tears, losses or repairs. The frame displays light wear consistent with age and is ready for hanging.
