The spherical body is formed from eight individual smoked-glass segments arranged within a strongly symmetrical octagonal framework. The faceted construction gives the pendant an almost jewel-like appearance, while the tinted glass creates a warm and atmospheric quality of light when illuminated. Above the globe is a substantial stepped chrome-plated gallery with decorative upper finial, suspended from an original heavy white-metal chain and cast aluminium ceiling plate. An octagonal chrome platform and tubular internal sub-frame provide the structural framework for the glass panels. The original b22 bayonet bulb holder is housed within a chrome-plated central structure and canopy, maintaining the geometric character throughout the design. With its combination of smoked glass, polished metal and futuristic geometry, the fixture captures the space age and new age aesthetic that emerged in european lighting during the 1960s and 1970s. Freshly rewired in period-appropriate three-core fabric-braided cable, earthed and tested, and reported to be in full working order.
