Painted in oil on board, the work reflects Jackson's distinctive Impressionist approach, characterised by confident brushwork, strong effects of natural light and an ability to convey the atmosphere of water and landscape. His early exposure to Sydney Harbour became a lasting influence and marine subjects remained an important element of his career. The painting has inscriptions to the reverse providing provenance and is presented in an impressive carved gilt gold-leaf frame, giving the work a particularly strong decorative presence. Born in Bunnythorpe, New Zealand, in 1882, James Ranalph Jackson moved with his family to Sydney during his childhood. He studied drawing at the Royal Art Society of New South Wales and briefly attended J. S. Watkins's art school before travelling to Europe. In London, Jackson worked under celebrated artist Sir Frank Brangwyn, whose encouragement influenced his use of substantial, expressive paint handling. He subsequently studied for a year at the Académie Colarossi in Paris, where he absorbed the principles of European Impressionism while travelling extensively through France and elsewhere in Europe. Returning to Sydney in 1908, Jackson became closely involved with the Australian art establishment. He exhibited regularly, taught drawing and painting at the Art Society and held his first solo exhibition in 1920. Following further travels through France, Italy, Switzerland, Spain and Britain during the late 1920s, he returned to Australia and continued painting throughout a remarkably long career. Jackson became a foundation member of the Australian Academy of Art in 1937, exhibiting with the organisation annually until 1946. His paintings are represented in numerous Australian public and private collections.
