Executed in oil on canvas, the composition presents a sweeping Nordic landscape of towering rocky cliffs and distant snow-dusted mountains rising above the tranquil waters of the fjord. Small boats provide a sense of scale, emphasising the immense proportions and dramatic natural beauty of the surrounding landscape. Enfield was particularly accomplished in marine, coastal and Norwegian landscape subjects, combining careful observation with an atmospheric treatment of light, water and distant terrain. His extensive periods living and travelling in continental Europe gave him direct access to many of the landscapes that became central to his work. At an imposing 46 inches wide and approximately 52.5 inches framed, this is a substantial example of Enfield's work with excellent decorative presence. The painting is signed at the lower right and additionally signed and inscribed with its title on the reverse/stretcher, providing valuable contemporary identification of the subject. The canvas remains in very good age-appropriate condition. A particularly attractive example of 19th-century British landscape painting, combining Victorian romanticism with the spectacular scenery of the Norwegian fjords. About Henry Enfield Henry Enfield (1849–1923) was a British landscape and marine painter particularly associated with atmospheric coastal views and dramatic Norwegian fjord landscapes. Born in London, Enfield initially trained for the legal profession and worked with his family's firm of solicitors in Nottingham. His artistic ambitions eventually took him to Paris, where between 1873 and 1875 he studied under the celebrated portrait painter Carolus-Duran. During this period he became acquainted with Robert Louis Stevenson and Stevenson's artist cousin Robert Alan Mowbray Stevenson. Enfield subsequently spent considerable periods working on the European continent. He lived in Düsseldorf, where he became associated with the Künstlerverein Malkasten, and later worked in Berlin and elsewhere in northern Europe. Throughout his career Enfield exhibited internationally, including nine works at the Royal Academy in London, as well as participating in exhibitions in Germany. Working in both oils and watercolours, Enfield developed a particular reputation for marine and landscape subjects, with his Norwegian views among his most visually striking compositions. Works by Enfield are represented in public collections, including Nottingham Castle.
