Executed in oil on canvas, the painting captures the distinctive character of Venice through Boucart's carefully observed architecture and sensitive treatment of water, light and atmosphere. Venice became one of the artist's favoured subjects, and his views of the city's canals and buildings form an important and particularly recognisable part of his oeuvre. The intimate scale gives the painting considerable charm, while the architectural composition and reflections on the water create a convincing sense of depth and place. The work is signed at the lower left and retains its particularly attractive original gold leaf frame, complementing the warm tones of the composition and giving the painting an elegant period presentation. The painting also benefits from notable provenance through Gladwell & Patterson, the established London fine art gallery, adding further interest for collectors. About Gaston Hippolyte Ambroise Boucart Gaston Hippolyte Ambroise Boucart (1878–1962) was a French painter known for architectural subjects, landscapes, animals, townscapes and particularly his paintings of Venice. Born in Angoulême, France, Boucart studied under several significant French artists, including Gustave Moreau, Aimé Morot, François Flameng and Fernand Cormon. His artistic interests ranged from quiet country lanes and carefully observed interiors to architectural views and urban landscapes. He developed a particular affinity for Venice, repeatedly depicting its canals, waterways and historic buildings. Boucart exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris from 1913 to 1939, later becoming a member. He received an honourable mention in 1928 and was recognised for his contribution to the arts during the 1930s. His work is represented in museum collections including those of Angoulême and Niort.
