A striking mid-20th-century Tibetan Buddhist gold Om Mantra Mandala, traditionally associated with Namgyal Monastery in Tibet. Entirely handmade on prepared canvas, the composition is meticulously painted using traditional rock and mineral-derived pigments. Set against a dramatic dark ground, the mandala features concentric bands of finely rendered sacred script executed in warm golden tones, surrounded by an intricately decorated circular border. At the centre of the composition is the sacred syllable Om, one of the most significant spiritual sounds and symbols within Buddhist and wider Indian religious traditions. Om is traditionally understood as a primordial sacred syllable and is frequently incorporated into mantras, meditation and ritual practice. The repeated sacred script radiates outward in precisely ordered concentric circles, transforming the mantra into an intricate visual meditation. This combination of sacred sound and geometric form unites two important elements of Buddhist contemplative practice: the mantra as a verbal expression of spiritual intention and the mandala as a symbolic representation of an ordered sacred universe. Within Tibetan Buddhism, mantras are recited as aids to concentration, meditation and spiritual transformation. When incorporated into a mandala, the written syllables become part of the sacred geometry itself, creating a visual expression of repetition, continuity and interconnectedness. The circular form traditionally evokes concepts of wholeness, cosmic order and the cyclical nature of existence, while the movement of the script toward and around the central syllable directs attention to the spiritual centre of the composition. with its dramatic black ground, finely rendered gold-toned script, balanced square format and intricate concentric design, this mandala has a particularly strong graphic and decorative presence while retaining its traditional contemplative significance.
