The composition captures the celebrated tidal island rising dramatically from Mount’s Bay, with its historic buildings silhouetted against an expansive coastal sky. Woodward uses confident, expressive brushwork and a restrained natural palette to convey the changing light, water and distinctive maritime atmosphere of the Cornish coastline. The work is signed by the artist and offers an appealing interpretation of one of Britain's most recognisable coastal landmarks. The combination of sea, distant architecture and atmospheric sky gives the relatively compact painting an impressive sense of depth and perspective. Presented within an attractive ornate oval gilt frame and protected beneath glazing, the traditional presentation complements the romantic coastal subject particularly well. A decorative and collectable example of British coastal painting, particularly appealing to collectors of Cornish landscapes, maritime art and views of St Michael’s Mount. Condition: Good vintage condition overall. The painting and frame display light age-related wear consistent with their age, with no major damage noted.
