The tall turned and carved stem features a succession of geometric, fluted and foliate-inspired details, creating an architectural silhouette reminiscent of traditional ecclesiastical and European decorative woodwork. Traces of the original gilded and painted decoration remain throughout, now mellowed by time into a wonderfully atmospheric surface with deep tones and flashes of warm gilt and colour. Raised on a substantial carved base, the candlestick terminates in a circular candle platform with its original-style central spike for securing a candle. Its slender proportions and extensive hand-carved detailing give the piece considerable decorative presence despite its relatively compact scale. The surface displays wear, rubbing, losses to the painted and gilded finish, marks and other imperfections consistent with age and use. These contribute greatly to its authentic antique character and attractive time-worn patina. A striking decorative object suitable for a traditional, rustic or eclectic interior, whether displayed as a functional candlestick or simply as an architectural accent. Date: Circa 1900 Material: Carved wood with painted and gilt decoration Colour: Dark brown/black with gilt and red-toned remnants Measurements: Height: 39 cm Width: approximately 10 cm Depth: approximately 10 cm See less
