The composition depicts a … Read more A compelling and thought-provoking figurative study entitled Watching Fish by the North Wales artist Noel McCready. The composition depicts a nude woman reclining upon a platform above a pond, gazing down into the water at the fish below. The elegant, sinuous form of the figure appears to echo the movement of the fish, creating a striking visual relationship between the woman and her surroundings. This unusual composition gives the work a distinctly contemplative and symbolic quality. McCready trained at the Liverpool School of Art and has worked in North Wales, including as an occasional lecturer in Fine Art at Bangor University. His artistic influences include Paul Gauguin, Édouard Vuillard, Maurice Denis and Édouard Manet, with elements of these influences evident in his approach to colour, composition and the treatment of the human figure. The artist is also known for a particularly thorough and considered working process. Watching Fish demonstrates an accomplished understanding of form and composition, with the unusual subject matter giving the painting considerable individuality. The work is currently framed in a landscape-oriented presentation, although its composition is particularly effective when displayed in the orientation shown in the photographs.
