The cabinet has a wonderfully graceful serpentine profile, with sweeping curves across the front complemented by stepped mouldings and carefully worked decorative detailing. Rich walnut veneers provide warmth and depth, while finely executed floral marquetry inlay creates an elegant contrast across the façade. Behind the three cupboard doors is generous storage, making the piece as practical as it is decorative. A useful central drawer sits above the middle cupboard and retains its charming original decorative ceramic knob. Particularly appealing is the survival of all three original working keys, allowing each of the cupboard sections to be secured and adding considerably to the completeness and period character of the piece. The combination of its curvaceous silhouette, warm walnut, delicate floral inlay and substantial proportions gives the sideboard excellent decorative presence. It would work beautifully as a dining-room sideboard, drawing-room cabinet, hallway statement piece or decorative storage cabinet within either a traditional interior or a contemporary setting incorporating antique furniture. The cabinet remains solid, sturdy and ready for use, displaying an attractive aged patina and expected surface wear consistent with its age and previous use.
