This elegant classical study depicts a graceful young woman captured in a moment of modest surprise, partially enveloped in flowing drapery and leaning against a naturalistically modelled tree bough. The beautifully balanced composition combines classical inspiration with the refined sculptural character for which royal worcester became internationally celebrated. Executed in fine white glazed porcelain, the figure is richly enhanced with gilt decoration applied to the flowing drapery, tree trunk and shaped base. The contrast between the brilliant white porcelain and warm gilding accentuates the sculptural modelling and gives the piece an exceptionally elegant appearance. Particular attention has been given to the delicately rendered facial features, flowing hair, hands and natural movement of the figure. The fluid pose and softly modelled drapery demonstrate the exceptional technical quality of royal worcester's figural production during the early 20th century. The design is after sir thomas brock ra, one of britain's most important late victorian and edwardian sculptors, whose monumental and figurative works included the victoria memorial outside buckingham palace. The underside bears the puce printed royal worcester factory mark together with model number 486 and the date code corresponding to 1921, confirming the period of manufacture. The bather surprised is one of royal worcester's particularly appealing classical figural designs and makes an impressive addition to a collection of english porcelain, early 20th-century sculpture or classical-inspired decorative arts. Presented in excellent antique condition, with no chips, cracks or restoration noted. Only very minor age-related surface marks are present, consistent with careful display and more than a century of age. A beautifully preserved and highly decorative royal worcester figure combining the sculptural artistry of sir thomas brock with the technical excellence of one of england's most celebrated porcelain manufacturers.
