Very well made and of good quality, this impressive bureau reflects the functional craftsmanship associated with the Arts and Crafts movement, balancing practical storage and usability with restrained decorative character. The upper section features a glazed cabinet, providing an attractive display area for books, glassware, collectibles or treasured decorative objects. A raised gallery completes the upper section and adds further architectural interest to the design. The central section incorporates a fitted writing interior, thoughtfully arranged to provide useful organisation and storage for stationery, correspondence and other writing essentials. The writing section creates a practical workspace at a comfortable desk height of 75 cm, making the bureau as functional as it is decorative. Beneath the writing area are two useful open shelves, providing additional accessible storage or display space for books, ornaments, baskets and other household items. The bureau also comes complete with its key, adding another traditional and practical feature to the piece. The oak has matured beautifully, displaying gorgeous natural grain, rich warm colouring and attractive tonal variation throughout. The natural character of the timber works particularly well with the understated Arts and Crafts design. At only 68 cm wide and 26.5 cm deep, the bureau has a particularly useful narrow footprint. Its impressive 155 cm height allows it to provide considerable display, writing and storage functionality while occupying relatively little floor space. Its distinctive proportions and unusual combination of glazed display, fitted writing space and open shelving make this a particularly versatile and desirable piece for a study, living room, hallway or bedroom. Presented in good vintage condition, with appropriate signs of age and historic use consistent with its 20th-century origin. A highly characterful Arts and Crafts oak bureau combining glazed display space, a fitted writing interior, two open shelves and beautifully matured timber within an exceptionally practical compact design.
