Painted in oil on canvas, the composition depicts a tranquil stretch of water bordered by lush vegetation and mature trees, with two figures positioned along the riverbank. An expansive cloud-filled sky dominates the landscape, while the still water reflects the surrounding countryside and changing light. Petitjean's combination of careful observation with loose, expressive handling is particularly evident here. Soft blues and whites across the sky contrast with the richer greens, browns and autumnal tones of the riverbank, creating a convincing sense of depth and atmosphere. The painting is presented in its impressive original carved gold-leaf frame, which complements the work beautifully and gives it considerable decorative presence. Born in the Vosges in 1844, Edmond Marie Petitjean first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1874 and became a member of the Société des Artistes Français in 1883. His career was marked by numerous awards and distinctions, including medals at the Salon and international exhibitions. Petitjean received a silver medal at the Exposition Universelle of 1889 and a gold medal at the Exposition Universelle of 1900. He was also appointed a Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur. Although influenced by the French landscape tradition, Petitjean embraced the increasingly free brushwork and lighter palette associated with late 19th-century painting. He travelled extensively, painting landscapes throughout Lorraine, the Vosges and Massif Central, as well as marine and coastal subjects in Brittany and Normandy. During the later part of his career he became particularly associated with port and harbour scenes. His paintings are represented in numerous French public collections, including museums in Amiens, Arras, Chambéry, Digne, Épinal, Gray, Nancy, Paris, Reims, La Rochelle and Toul.
