A handsome early 20th-century challenge trophy cup, beautifully fashioned in sterling silver and mounted upon a substantial turned wooden base. The piece displays strong Art Nouveau influence, combining flowing handles, stylised floral ornament and elegant repoussé decoration. ㅤ The cylindrical body is flanked by two sweeping open handles enriched with rope-twist detailing, giving the trophy an impressive symmetrical silhouette while introducing additional texture to the polished surface. ㅤ The front is particularly decorative, featuring an elaborate raised floral motif framed by scrolling lines and further foliate ornament toward the lower section. The inscription “Challenge Cup” appears prominently around the upper body, clearly identifying its original presentation purpose. ㅤ The broad upper rim is shaped with a gently undulating outline characteristic of the organic decorative vocabulary fashionable during the Art Nouveau period. Its highly polished finish beautifully contrasts with the deeper relief of the applied and embossed ornament. ㅤ Mounted upon a circular turned hardwood plinth, the trophy has a substantial and architectural presence. The rich tone of the wood provides an attractive contrast against the bright silver-coloured metal and enhances its suitability as a decorative display object. ㅤ Originally created as a sporting or competition prize, the cup now makes a characterful decorative object for a library, study, office or collection of antique presentation and sporting memorabilia.
