A superb and highly distinctive vintage bmf west german beerstein, combining a beautifully decorated glass body with an elaborate pewter lid and an impressive boar’s head finial. Standing approximately 8.5 inches tall, this is an especially attractive example for collectors of german steins, breweriana and decorative pewter. The tankard features a wonderful painted countryside scene on the glass, incorporating a prominent wild boar together with flying ducks, rural landscape and traditional pastoral decoration. The artwork gives the piece considerably more character than examples where the animal is represented solely through the pewter finial. The substantial pewter top is surmounted by a striking hog or boar’s head, creating an instantly recognisable and highly decorative silhouette. The combination of the sculptural pewter work and colourful painted glass makes this a particularly unusual collector's example. Produced in west germany, this bmf tankard reflects the long european tradition of decorative beer steins, combining practical drinkware with highly detailed sculptural and pictorial decoration. It would make an excellent addition to a collection of german beersteins, hunting-themed breweriana, pewter or vintage european glassware, or simply an impressive display piece for a bar, study or cabinet.
