Cole, signed and dated 1903, depicting a weathered sailor standing beside the shore while thoughtfully smoking his pipe. The sitter, a classic “old salt” figure, is portrayed in traditional working clothes and dark seafarer’s cap, his rugged features and contemplative expression beautifully captured by the artist. Holding his long-stemmed pipe, he stands against a coastal backdrop with the sea, shoreline and fishing nets visible beyond. Executed in oil on canvas, the painting combines accomplished portraiture with the narrative quality characteristic of british coastal genre painting around the turn of the 20th century. Warm ochres and earthy browns contrast effectively against the pale blue sky and sea, while carefully observed details in the sitter’s face, hands and clothing give the composition considerable personality. The subject reflects the fascination with fishermen, sailors and traditional coastal communities that became an important theme in late victorian and edwardian british art. Signed “f. C. Cole” to the lower right and dated 1903, the painting is presented within a substantial period-style gilt frame decorated with scrolling foliage, flowers and rococo-inspired corner ornament. The generous frame gives the work impressive decorative presence. A particularly appealing piece for collectors of british maritime art, nautical paintings, edwardian portraiture and traditional genre scenes. Artist f. C.
