An elegant original edwardian cast iron fireplace surround dating precisely to 1907, reclaimed from a period property in rochester, kent. The surround is distinguished by beautifully crisp classical decoration, with finely cast floral swags and ribbon-and-bow motifs enriching the frieze. The restrained uprights provide an elegant architectural balance, allowing the decorative detailing above to become the focal point of the composition. A particularly desirable feature is the substantial double-skinned cast iron mantel top. This is the original period component rather than a later replacement, preserving the authenticity and integrity of the fireplace.
an authentic registration number dates the design to 1907, placing the piece firmly within the edwardian period and providing an important historical reference. With no rear projection, the fireplace can sit flush against a flat wall or be installed around an existing fireplace opening. This versatile configuration also makes it particularly suitable as a decorative surround for a suitably installed wood-burning stove. The fireplace has undergone a comprehensive professional refurbishment. Historic layers of paint were painstakingly removed by hand rather than through shot blasting, helping to protect the original cast iron surface and preserve the exceptional definition of the decorative casting. Following stripping, the entire surround was carefully wire brushed to both the front and reverse. Traditional grate polish was then applied and buffed, producing a rich gunmetal finish that beautifully accentuates the swags, bows and architectural details. The reverse has also been professionally prepared and spray painted, ensuring that the fireplace has been fully refurbished from front to back. A refined example of early 20th-century british architectural ironwork, combining documented 1907 dating, original components, kent provenance and elegant edwardian decoration.
