The central composition depicts a lively social scene, with numerous figures and carefully modelled details creating considerable depth, texture and visual interest. The relief work gives the screen an almost sculptural quality, making it as appealing as a decorative work of art as it is a traditional fireside accessory. The richly aged brass displays warm golden and darker patinated tones that accentuate the raised decoration and contribute to the authentic period character of the piece. A timber structure provides additional strength and stability, while the compact proportions allow the screen to sit comfortably in front of a fireplace without overwhelming the surrounding interior. Presented in good antique condition, with appropriate signs of age and use consistent with its 19th-century origin. An unusual and characterful example of Victorian decorative metalwork, ideally suited to a traditional fireplace, country-house interior, library or eclectic living space.
